Black belt Buzz Scharringhausen recently explained how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can greatly improve your life.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a lifestyle. It’s not your typical sport, and that’s easy to see during your very first days of training. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, offers so many physical and mental health benefits that it’s not something many people give up after just a few training sessions. In fact, BJJ black belt Buzz Scharringhausen recently explained how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will drastically change your life for the better, even after just a short time of training.

Buzz Scharringhausen explained that the first thing many BJJ students notice is the improvement in physical strength, balance, and flexibility. The physical changes in the body are easy to see after even a few days of training. BJJ teaches body awareness, mobility, and strength that can be a lot more difficult to learn in other sports and disciplines. At first, some maneuvers may seem difficult or even impossible to complete. However, after just a few sessions, that mobility increases. This superior flexibility and range of motion can result in fewer injuries on and off the mat.

“Experiencing the increased physical strength, balance, mobility and other benefits of BJJ will undoubtedly inspire you to continue practicing the sport,” Buzz Scharringhausen said. “This isn’t a sport, like football or basketball, that you forget about when the season is over. It’s a year-round training program that promotes lifelong health and well-being.”

Buzz Scharringhausen explained that the benefits of BJJ are as mental as they are physical. He added that while the physical benefits are more visible, the mental benefits can be even more beneficial.

“BJJ requires endless mental technique, which is developed by practicing the same maneuvers repeatedly,” Buzz Scharringhausen said. “It’s a sport that requires you to power through frustration and continue toward your goal.”

Buzz Scharringhausen explained that BJJ is not a sport for those who give up easily. Learning a technique and eventually mastering it is a process that requires daily practice. A single maneuver can take weeks or even months to master. BJJ requires immense amounts of mental focus and resilience, but Buzz Scharringhausen stated that it can also be a great stress reliever.

“BJJ requires so much focus that the other worries or stressors in your life are put on the back-burner while you’re at the gym training,” Buzz Scharringhausen said. “This is the stress relief so many of us need. BJJ offers a much-needed opportunity to walk away from stress, even if just for a short amount of time.”

Buzz Scharringhausen concluded by stating that you may enter BJJ hoping to improve your physical strength and health, but you’ll leave with new abilities, superior mental focus, and reduced stress. The skills learned through BJJ are ones that can be carried over into daily life, and that’s how you know you’ve become part of the BJJ lifestyle.
