The arrest of prominent local businessman Damon Becnel on charges he physically abused his daughter and tortured a family pet in front of her has created community backlash and re-ignited a nasty 15-year-old custody battle near Mary Esther Florida.

Florida domestic violence and child abuse.

Becnel, who the Florida Division of Corporations lists as a managing partner of 26 businesses, among them president of Sandestin Police Department Inc. was charged Jan. 2 with child cruelty and cruelty to animals. His 14-year-old, reported the abuse and provided police with video that appears to depict, graphically, a knife wielding Becnel abusing the girl and the animal. Becnel later could be seen striking the dog and grabbing it by the throat and throwing it to the floor while the child yells at him to stop. The arrest report said he grabbed his daughter by the hair and pushed her head toward the bed, where it struck the bed frame.

Allison Tringas, the mother of Becnel’s daughter, filed a Petition for Injunction Against Domestic Violence on behalf of the girl. The petition claims Becnel was intoxicated when he assaulted the teen and the dog and at one point during the confrontation, when she was pinned against a closet door, she “asked Damon if he was going to kill her, to which he replied “maybe.”

Factors to support choice of criminal attorney.

If you have been charged with a crime near Mary Esther Florida that could land you in jail and cost you large amounts of money, with the continued threat of damaging your entire future, it is imperative that you research criminal defense attorneys to assess the value of their services based on 1) case load; 2) jury trial case – experience; 3) years practicing – experience; 4) success rate; 5) venue; and 6) case diversity.

Hiring private attorney versus public defender.

Hiring your own criminal defense lawyer is a smarter option instead of accepting the services of a public defender. It may be better to borrow funds to hire a professional who choses your case after reviewing it.  Public defenders do not choose a client’s case based on its merit but rather, they are burdened with it as part of their case load, which may sway them toward plea deals.

Criminal charge impacts.

The consequences of a criminal charge involving child cruelty and animal cruelty can be severe and negatively life altering and punishment can range from a third degree felony charge with up to five years in prison, to a second degree felony with prison time up to fifteen years.
