Medical Emergency Responsible for Car Crash in Cedar Rapids, IA

Feb 25, 2020 2:00 AM ET

While most auto accidents happen on account of driver error, there are times when other, less common factors contribute to an accident occurring. Medical emergencies are one of those factors. Just a few days ago, KCRG reported on an incident involving a 58-year-old man who suffered a medical emergency while behind the wheel in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The news source highlighted that it was just before 8:50 p.m. on February 18, 2020, when a 58-year-old man suffered a medical emergency while traveling on the eastbound exit from Highway 30 to Edgewood SW. As a result, the driver went through the traffic light at Edgewood Road SW and crashed into a 21-year-older driver. Police and medical emergency personnel arrived at the scene and had to cut the 21-year-old out of his vehicle.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department said both drivers had to be transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said they would continue to investigate the incident.

Steps You Should Take After an Accident in Cedar Rapids, IA

While we can’t exactly plan for an accident as one could occur at any given time, we can prepare ourselves. Knowing what to do the moments following a crash is very important as the decisions you make could save a life or even affect your ability to recover compensation for the damages suffered. Therefore, consider these steps if you ever find yourself involved in an accident in Cedar Rapids, IA:

Move your vehicle off the roadway so that it is not obstructing traffic.
Check for injuries. If you and everyone inside your vehicle are uninjured, check to see if anyone else involved suffered an injury.
Call 911. Regardless of whether injuries were suffered, you are going to want to call the police so that an officer can be dispatched to the accident scene.
Avoid saying anything that might imply you caused the accident or played a role in causing it to occur.
Exchange information with anyone else who was involved in the accident.
Remain at the scene until a police officer arrives and a report is written up.
Take photos and/or a video of your injuries, property damage, and statements from witnesses. It would also be a good idea to capture the accident scene and any markings on the ground if it is safe for you to do so.
Seek medical attention. It is always a good idea to have a medical professional assess your condition following the occurrence of a crash to ensure you didn’t suffer any serious injuries.
