Motorcyclist Dies in Single-Vehicle Accident Near Construction Zone in Live Oak, FL

Mar 3, 2020 2:05 PM ET

Thirty-six-year old Dennis Karr Corbin of Live Oak, Florida was described as someone who “cherished motorcycles.” Sadly, he recently lost his life to an accident that occurred while he was riding his motorcycle on U.S. 1 nearby to a construction zone near Matanzas Woods Parkway, says Flagler Live. Although officials know that the incident occurred on Sunday, February 9, 2020, they aren’t sure exactly what time it transpired as Corbin was riding alone.

It wasn’t until a couple noticed a crash had occurred at around 2:30 a.m. and found Corbin “partially off the roadway, not moving.” They called 911 and first responders arrived at the scene within minutes. The source says that when medics arrived, Corbin was not breathing. A Flagler County Sheriff’s deputy conducted CPR on the man until a Palm Coast Fire Department unit along with the Flagler County Fire Rescue arrived. After a few minutes had passed, Corbin was pronounced dead.

The Florida Highway Patrol determined that Corbin was not been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Investigators believe “he lost control of his motorcycle after striking a raised concrete median.” After news of Corbin’s death spread, family and friends took to Facebook to share their thoughts and feelings on his untimely death. The 36-year-old leaves behind two teen children.

The source says that Corbin had previously worked at the Florida Department of Transportation, which is the agency “in charge of the ongoing roundabout construction at U.S. 1 and Matanzas Woods.” The roundabout aims to reduce fatalities as it is considered one of the “county’s most crash-prone intersections.” The source says that Corbin’s death was the fifth to be recorded on Flagler roads this year and the second incident that involved a motorcycle.

When can a motorcycle accident victim or their surviving family sue the city for a collision?

A lawsuit can be filed against a city when it is determined that a city worker(s) was negligent in some way and that negligence served as a factor in an accident. For example, if a construction crew failed to block off an unsafe area that was being worked on or neglected to put up the proper roadway signage that contributed to a collision occurring, the city could potentially be sued for the wreck. Although it can sometimes be difficult to win a case against the City of Live Oak, FL or any other city in the U.S., it is possible when you can prove the city’s negligence is what caused the accident to happen.
