Pushing One Step Further In Your Career

Apr 2, 2020 11:05 PM ET

Your career is very important, but you already know that. However, what you probably don’t know, or you don’t want to know is that you need to start pushing that one step further if you are not completely satisfied with where you are right now. Some people are, and if that sounds like you then no problem, stay where you are and be happy.

But, if that’s not you, and you’ve been thinking about ways that you can push your career just that little bit forward, then you have come to the right place. In this article, we are going to be looking at some of the ways that you can do this so that you can move up in your chosen industry. Keep reading down below if you want to find out more.

Look Into Marketing For Yourself

You need to know how to market yourself. Now, you might be thinking that’s a weird term to use seeing as marketing is usually associated with business, and it’s true. But, you still need to know how to make yourself look good to potential employers, and other people that you want to take an interest in you. If you can’t make yourself stand out from the rest of the people who are trying to advance your career, then there’s no way you’re going to be able to make it.

Know what your strengths are and don’t be afraid to say what they are. Some people get very self-conscious when it comes to saying the good things about them, but you can’t do this when you want to push your career forward. You need to be bold, brave, and maybe even a little bit arrogant so that you get your point across.

Use this to help your CV. Make it bold, make it stand out, let people see the side of you that they are going to want in their business. Make yourself valuable to them, and they will pay attention. You need to be able to show employers why they should want you.

Start Your Own Business

Something else that you could consider is starting your own business. We know that this is scary so try not to panic, but it could be the best thing for you. Especially if you don’t like working for other people, starting your own business could be just what you need to move forward with your career. It’s not going to be possible for everyone, and you need to think long and hard about whether you can dedicate the amount of time necessary to make this work. If not, then it’s not going to be any use because your business won’t take off and you’re going to be stuck back where you are now.

However, if you think that you can dedicate the amount of time and effort that is needed, then you should consider doing this. You are going to need an excellent idea, find a gap on the market, marketing resources, work out how to fund your business either by yourself, through investors, crowdfunding etc. and then you can get started.

More Education

Or, you could consider looking into getting more education. A lot of people underestimate how important education is. Without the correct knowledge, you are going to have a hard time moving up in the ranks of business. Not to say that it’s impossible, there are plenty of people who have done well without a formal education, but it makes things easier for you if you have one. For example, you could think about online accelerated bsn programs for non nurses if nursing is something that you want to do. Or, you could think about getting a masters degree if you already have your undergraduate. You could even get your undergrad if you don’t have it yet. As long as you are making progress, there is no right option here.

We know that education isn’t for everyone, so this isn’t something that you must do if you want to succeed, but there is no harm in trying. If it doesn’t work out for you then drop out, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Take The Risk

A lot of moving forward is about taking risks. You’ve got to be willing to take the risk, make that jump into the new life that you are looking for. It is scary, and that is why a lot of people put it off for as long as they can, but if you are brave enough to take the jump, then the reward is going to be worth it. It’s worth keeping in mind that you’re not going to succeed every single time. That’s not how the world works, and you need to be prepared for this. If you can’t handle rejection, or you aren’t going to be able to take it if you miss a step and have a stumble, then pushing your career forward isn’t going to go well. You’ve got to be willing to lose, to win.

Make Connections

Finally, you need to be making connections wherever you go. If you’ve ever heard the phrase, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know then you know how important it is to know people in high places. The more connections you have, the more likely you are to be involved in social events, where you meet other people who could potentially help you. Not everyone is a social butterfly, but you need to do your best if you want your career to excel. You never know when you could be meeting someone who could help you take your career to new heights.

Don’t underestimate the power of knowing people, and don’t underestimate the power of being kind. It’s not all about your academic or work achievements, it’s about who you are as a person.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the ways that you can go about pushing your career one step further. Good luck and we hope that you get where you want to be soon.
