More retailers are closed at Easter than in previous years due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to the long list of companies that are temporarily closed due to COVID-19, some grocery stores that have traditionally kept their doors open on vacation are being closed to give employees a day off.

Many stores have also shortened opening hours to give employees time to restock and clean the shelves. There are also special opening times for seniors and those who are most susceptible to the virus.

Trader Joe’s, Sprouts Farmers Market, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Southeastern Grocers (BI-LO, Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket, and Winn-Dixie) are among the retailers that announced they will close on April 12, facing a change the previous year. Not all companies have announced plans for 2020.

Trader Joe’s, in an announcement on its website, advises buyers “to fill your Trader Joe baskets early for Easter dishes” as the shops are closed “to provide our incredible crew members with a much-needed day off.”

BJ’s 218-location wholesale club said in a statement that all clubs will be closed “to give team members a day to rest and recharge”.

Shops traditionally closed at Easter include: Costco, Sam’s Club and Target. Shopping centers and department stores, most of which are closed due to COVID-19, have also remained closed at Easter in recent years, while hardware stores, convenience store stores and drug stores have remained open.

Sears, which has closed hundreds of locations in recent years, has been an exception in recent years. This year the shops will be closed as the retailer in a Press release that all stores would be closed Saturday through “April 30 at least.”
