Since its creation in 1992, the Premier League has battled for the title of Europe’s top league. In the late ’90s, it was Italy’s Serie A that provided the chief competition. Then came the rise of La Liga, peaking with the Barcelona teams of Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola. In more recent times, the Bundesliga has threatened, at least in the entertainment stakes. The result of the league being so consistently strong for more than two decades that it features some truly outstanding sides, making it one of the most entertaining football leagues in the world.

Manchester City and Liverpool have topped the Premier League over the last couple of seasons and eras, landing some of the biggest points haul competition has ever seen. In the proces, we football fans got to see some incredible plays and attacking football.  In Premier League history, many people regard the newly-crowned Premier League Champions Liverpool as the best side. Although Manchester United have been the most decorated team in Premier League history, the Red Devils have won the competition a whopping 13 times in their history. Only seven teams have won the Premier League since its inception, with Liverpool the reigning champions after their stunning performance in the 2019-20 season.

In the past, while Manchester United and Manchester City have had iconic sides in the competition, Liverpool side is arguably the best of the lot among the list of the greatest teams in Premier League history currently.

Jurgen Klopp’s side and wonders created by his mentality helped Liverpool earn the Premier League title last season by a staggering 18 point margin. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side finished second. The Reds topped the table with 99 points from 38 games. Having won 26 of their first 27 league games, Liverpool enjoyed the greatest start to a league season in the history of Europe’s top-five leagues.

Jurgen Klopp’s side captured the Premier League title for the first time last season and it was their first league title in 30 years. It took that long for the Reds to get back to the top of the list of most successful English sides, above rivals United, when it comes to most trophies won, with 42. Despite that, the side down the M62 still lead with most league titles, with 20 compared to Liverpool’s 19, although how long till they add to their 20 remains to be seen. Liverpool’s longevity has helped them stay ahead of United when it comes to ranking English clubs though.

The other four greatest Premier League teams are – Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United team have won three successive Premier League crowns in the 2000s, Jose Mourinho’s pragmatic Chelsea side from the point of him as a rising star at Stamford Bridge, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal’s Invincibles and Guardiola’s record breaking team that won 198 points in two league seasons combined, being the greatest sides in the competition’s history.

Liverpool received worldwide praise for their rampant nature of their title victory. At this point in the season it looks more like Liverpool will stretch their lead over United than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will reduce the gap. There’s a long way to go and at the moment Klopp’s side aren’t top of the table and it doesn’t look like the title race will be quite as easy as last season’s for them.
